A wolf interval occurs in the circle of fifths in certain temperament schemes. It is dissonant in the face of harmony. It is the interval whose imperfection makes the other fifths perfect. Tradition holds that its discord sounds like a wolf howling.

Editorial Introduction - Volume 8

Welcome to the first digital issue of The Wolf Interval: A Journal of Student Writing at Juilliard. The purpose of this journal is to showcase the writing of Juilliard students and, where appropriate, to provide models for other writers to follow.

It is our hope that readers will find this writing both beautiful and instructive.

Work of this kind is always a community venture, and here we wish to thank our community. We thank the student contributors, first of all, for their willingness to share their work with us. We thank our colleagues in Liberal Arts and Music History for mediating student work to us.

Special thanks to Jillian De Four and Zuri Gordon, the co-editors and designers of this journal.

We hope The Wolf Interval will spark a larger conversation about the place of writing in the Juilliard curriculum. Feedback and inquiries are welcome. Please contact us at writing.center@juilliard.edu with questions or comments.

And now, as they say, in boca al lupo: into the mouth of the wolf!
